Sops of Wine Apple

Historical USDA watercolour of the Sops of Wine Apple apple, painted 1860–1873

Sops of Wine is a very old European apple whose name refers to its wine-red skin and the red staining that streaks its flesh, recalling bread "sopped" in wine. Early-ripening and aromatic, it was used both fresh and for cider for centuries.
