Black Gilliflower Apple

Historical USDA watercolour of the Black Gilliflower Apple apple, painted 1840–1873

Black Gilliflower, also called Sheepnose, is an old American apple recognised by its distinctive elongated, ribbed, conical shape and dull dark-red skin. Its flesh is mild, sweet and rather dry, and it was grown chiefly as a fresh-eating curiosity from New England southward.
