Black Ben Apple is a historic fruit cultivar documented by the U.S. Department of Agriculture between 1886 and 1942. 5 watercolour studies of it survive in the collection, with specimens recorded from Washington, Chelan, Wenatchee; Missouri, Pike, Louisiana; Colorado, Delta, Orchard City, painted by Shull, James Marion, Schutt, Ellen Isham, Newton, Amanda Almira. The paintings served as official botanical identification records before colour photography.
